Text Box:  Welcome to my website.
This is a bit of an experiment for me, not being technologically inclined.  It’s somewhat primitive so hang in there & bear with me.  Since I couldn't afford a web designer, it's all very DIY, punk rock & that.  If you keep that in mind, it may make navigating the rough bits seem a bit more hip (or something).
It’s called blakefraina.com, but it’s really less about me & more about promoting my book, “King of Cats.”
“King of Cats” is the result of a one year bout with Hypergraphia, (or as Poe so aptly dubbed it, “the midnight disease”).  It burst from my brain , full grown & fully armoured, like Athena from the head of Zeus.  Each of the five novellas that make up the book took between eight days and three weeks to write.  The entire thing was subjected to minimal editing &, despite its structural peculiarities, remains almost exactly as it was when it first emerged.  I like to give my work as much freedom as possible from the dictates of my will.
In short, it's the tragic success story of a mostly closeted gay rock musician living in New York’s East Village by way of London.  James Lyons (Jimmy Strange, to his fans) is lead guitarist & songwriter for the Mogs, a fictional band minted in the image of any one the current crop of retro-modern rock groups.  The five stories take us through various stages of his life, establishing key relationships & revealing the compromises he must make to succeed.  They take place in 2002, 2001, 1995, 2003 & 1987 -1990, respectively.  Back, forth... & back again.  While they can certainly be read independently of one another or in chronological order, experiencing them in the order that they were written seems to makes the most literary sense because it allows Jimmy’s story to unfold like a mystery.
I think, on a subconscious level, the book is a product of my fascination with celebrity culture.  I find that when I'm captivated by the work of an artist, be that person an actor, musician, writer (or what have you), learning about them is a backward process.  My initial introduction to the artist is through their work - a film, a record or a book, perhaps, that has moved me  or turns me on in some way &, sometimes, that's enough.   But if I become a truly hardcore fan of someone's work, I like to learn as much as I can about the person behind the art.  The keener my interest, the more I want to know about them.  And so I learnt about Jimmy.  I just kept digging until I got to the bottom of it.
While plenty of you may sneer at the avid readers of those supermarket tabloids beckoning to us in the check-out line, who wouldn’t stop to at least glance at the latest issue of “People” or “Star Magazine” if their favourite celebrity happened to be on the cover?
I see Jimmy Lyons as a direct descendant of those beleaguered heroines found in the trashy novels of Sidney Sheldon or Harold Robbins.   I mean, who doesn’t remember with at least a modicum of fondness Pia Zadora’s campy, bitterly triumphant Oscar speech at the end of “The Lonely Lady?" (Okay, okay, maybe only me).  But seriously, weren't you really rooting for her to succeed after that unfortunate little episode with Ray Liotta & the garden hose (Only me again?  No way.   You  must admit…now you're curious at least).
The point I'm making is, even though Jimmy may be super sexy, madly successful, profoundly talented & astonishingly handsome it’s the trials, tribulations & tragedies behind the triumph that make for a ripping hot beach read and I certainly think “King of Cats” has that.
I hope you agree.
Rather than excerpt the book on the website, I decided to do something a little different.  As a bit of a film buff, I thought it might be fun to imitate the “Deleted Scenes & Extras”  feature one might find on a DVD.   Follow that link to read additional stories written in between the various novellas.  Much like scenes from films that end up on the cutting room floor, this is material I opted not to include because it would have made the book unnecessarily long & didn’t really contribute anything meaningful to the story I wanted to tell.  However if you have read the book & would like more background into the relationships between some of the characters, it’s definitely worth a peek.  It certainly answers some questions.  Frankly, if you’ve not read the book, it may be a little hard to follow but it will give you a taste of my writing style & introduce you to all three of the book’s main characters, Jimmy, Elliott & Adam.  Just bear in mind, it's not really even been copy-edited at this point, so it's a little raw.  The cool thing, it’s never going to be published & it’s free!So even if you don’t want to purchase the book, you get to sample my writing risk-free.    Oh...I don't know what the internet protocol is, but beware (now Mum, pay attention here)...there's a lot of vulgar language & sexual situations over there.
About Me...
("Talking much about oneself can also be a means to conceal oneself."   --Friedrich W. Nietzche)
Two things, I'm into my privacy & I hate being photographed.   I have it on good authority that readers like to see what authors look like.  While some part of me suspects "Catcher in the Rye" still enjoys brisk sales despite the fact that no one's seen hide nor hair of old J.D. lo these many years, I have, nonetheless, acquiesced & posted some pictures.  We're number 1.2 million, so we try harder.  (Only those intimately familiar with my Amazon sales ranking obsession will understand).
Me...let's see, I'm a socialist, atheist & vegetarian -  a lapsed vegan, I'm afraid.  Although I've complete faith that one day my loathing of factory farming shall outweigh my weakness for cheese. [See...even us godless heathens have the heavy burden of our sins weighing down on us].   I'm big into animal rights & against corporate globalization (the new imperialism).  I only tell these things because I think it's important to know a little bit about what an artist stands for.  It's just bad karma to support someone that you disagree with philosophically.  If I knew for a fact that someone was a racist, homophobe, misogynist or a hunter I wouldn't want to give them my money.  Whatever your beliefs, I surely hope you operate on the same principle.  So there you have it.
I'm currently at work on a second novel, "Mephitisme" (the scent of death).
Hope you enjoy my site.  And buy my book, damn it!
